It has been reported to the UKMTO by the Master of a vessel via email that he
was approached by 2 white hulled skiffs containing 2 people on board and 3
people on board wearing yellow rain coats. Initially both skiffs were parallel to
the vessel on their starboard side at a distance of 2Nm. One skiff closed the

vessel’s starboard bow at speeds of 15 knots to within 0.5Nm. The on board
armed security team showed weapons, alarm was sounded, skiffs followed for
5mins and discontinued their approach. No weapons or ladders sighted. Vessel
is reported as Safe.

It has been reported that a Somalian Dhow has approached two fishing vessels
claiming to be in distress. The first approach was made towards a Spanish
fishing vessel that was witnessed to of had an armed security team (AST) on
board, after displaying weapons and the Dhow continuing to approach the AST
fired warning shots. The Suspect Dhow then ceased her approach and
approached the reporting, second fishing vessel, the team leader on board the
second fishing vessel stood to and displayed weapons, he identified the
language being spoken from the Dhow as Somalian. He raised the Dhow on VHF
instructing them to retreat to a distance of 2nm. The incident is still live, the
Dhow has maintained a distance of 2nm but remains in the area of the
reporting vessel. Further updates will follow as the situation develops .UPDATE:
6 people have been identified on board the dhow. 2 of the 6 people on board
have been seen with binoculars. They continued to ignore the team leaders
request to remain at a safe distance. The AST Team Leader informed them via
VHF (CH16) that there was an armed security team on board and advised not to
approach again and to leave the area. After this warning the dhow changed
course. Nothing further to report at this moment.
